A miracle is a tangible break of the laws of nature, often explained by divine intervention. Many religions define a miracle as intervention by God, such as birth, or surviving a hurricane or tornado. Another example of miracles could be surviving terminal illness or life threatening situations.
On May 27, 1988, the first appearance of the Crosses of Light was reported by the Pasadena Star News. This cross is reported to be shining through a bathroom window from the outside in El Monte. The source appears to be coming from the backyard, yet no source can be found. The cross appears as a three-dimensional image only visible from certain angles. In this run down, poor, mainly Hispanic neighborhood, there have been approximately 10 reports of crosses. Many of the lives of the residents have been touched by the crosses of light and the community has undergone great transformations.
The July 1991 cover story for Life magazine, titled “Do You Believe in Miracles?,” acknowledged thousands of unexplained phenomena occurring world-wide. With this article, Life became one of the first mainstream media sources in the United States to report these happenings. Peter Bonventre, senior editor of Life, researched these reports and found numerous accounts of sacred apparitions all over the world. The story revealed apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje (former Yugoslavia) for the past ten years. The fact that the story was reported as a cover story in a major American magazine is part of the miracle. Bonventre felt this was “one of the great stories of our time ...”
