Any couple who has had a child can remember counting fingers and toes. While they may think about what color eyes or hair their child will have or who they might look like, the thought of Cerebral Palsy, Hirschsprung’s Disease or CDH are probably not on the forefront of their minds.
Mallory Cooper was born with a severe case of Hirschsprung’s Disease which is caused by a lack of nerve endings in the intestinal system. During the first 5 years of her life, she had 17 surgeries. She is considered to be a miracle child because she has no large intestine and only a portion of her small intestines.
Elizabeth Gallagher was born with Cerebral Palsy and at 14 months old began having seizures, respiratory distress and the inability to eat. When she did eat she aspirated. Elizabeth has had a feeding tube inserted into her stomach since and is now 4 years old.
Mason Mitchell was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia or CDH which only 1 in 3000 are born with. This defect has only a 50% survival rate. This defect creates a hole in the diaphragm allowing the stomach, liver, spleen and intestine to drift up into the chest. At 3 days of age Mason had surgery to put his organs back where they belong. This little guy had some major complications resulting from his initial surgery which were repaired by performing additional operations. Mason is currently living without the assistance of life support apparatus.
These stories are only three of millions of what can be considered to be miracle births. What can these babies teach us? These little children have a keen ability to teach the healthy. They have an amazing way of educating us on the importance of patience, tolerance and acceptance.
