The lottery is not a new idea. Colonial Americans had a lottery game in order to raise funds to build roads, churches, libraries, and even Ivy League schools (Princeton, Colombia and Harvard). During the Civil War arguments arose stating that the lottery was a hidden tax. It wasn’t until 1964 that New Hampshire rejuvenated the lottery.
The lottery is a gambling game, but it has a purpose; it improves the standard of living. When you purchase a lottery ticket, there is a thrill when you dream what you would do with the winnings. Realistically, this is more of an entertainment than it is a hope because the odds are stacked against you in winning. You have better chances of getting into a car accident, plane accident, or struck by lightning, than winning the lottery. Your chance of winning the lottery is 18 million to one.
The only word to describe winning the lottery is a miracle. People do win every week though from playing the lottery. Phil Moses owns a grocery store in Wisconsin at 506 S. Main Street, which is on a strip dubbed “The Miracle Mile.” He can’t explain it, but his store has sold more $1 million lottery winnings than any other store. People actually come from all over to buy their lottery ticket here. A $100,000 ticket was sold at the Pic ‘N Save which is also located on “The Miracle Mile.” Miracles are counter to laws of nature; however, miracles, like winning the lottery, do happen.
