Miraculous Animal Rescues

The popular saying that a cat has nine lives does not explain Georgia, a kitten who escaped her carrying case while riding a subway train in New York City. After 25 days in the dark with rapidly moving commuter trains passing, track workers heard the plaintive cries and were able to rescue her.

Another amazing rescue involved a puppy on the west side of Detroit. Teenagers took five puppies, hog-tied them in an abandoned house, and set the house on fire. When the firefighters arrived, the fire prevented saving all five puppies. Eighty percent of the saved puppy’s body was covered with first, second and third degree burns. The pup, called Miracle, beat the 50-50 odds and survived.

In September, while being trucked to a slaughter house in Illinois, a pregnant thoroughbred survived the overturned crash of the double-deck truck and trailer. Rescuers eased the horses from the wreckage. The accident claimed the lives of 17 other horses. Two other pregnant mares miscarried due to the trauma. On April 18th, the mare birthed a healthy colt.

In Newcastle-under-Lime, Staffordshire, Australia, a one-year-old Jack Russell went exploring. Somehow, this little dog became stuck in a rabbit hole. A road crew entered the area with a digger to prepare it for widening the road. The digger could have crushed the puppy, called Hope, when it opened the hole.

Taronga Zoo cannot explain the live birth of a baby elephant two days after being declared dead. Ultrasound images confirmed the position as upside down. During the six days of labor, none of the five vital signs of life could be established.
